Common Problems in Drains

  1. Food residue is the No. 1 cause of blockages in the kitchen drain. If you don’t have a garbage disposal, clear all dishes of scraps before they go into the sink.
  2. Don’t put grease and oily substances down your drains – even while hot water is running. Oily liquids solidify when they cool, and they build up in your pipes. To get rid of grease, fats and oils, let them cool. Then scrape or pour them into empty food containers and throw them out with the trash.
  3. Flush your drains with Bio-Clean every few weeks. This enzyme needs about 8 hours in your drains to initiate the process of getting rid of yucky buildup, so do this at night before you go to bed. Take one scoop of Bio-Clean (you’ll find similar products at Home Depot, Lowe’s and local hardware stores). Read the instructions and, if it’s the same as Bio-Clean, you just add a scoop to a cup of warm water. Pour this mixture down the drain and allow it to sit for 8 hours. No need to flush the drain – resume normal use.
  4. Use a plunger the right way. If you’ve got a clogged sink or tub, first take an old rag and stuff it into your sink’s overflow holes. If your sink isn’t already full, fill it with a few inches of water and then use your plunger to loosen the stuck debris. Once you clear the drain, we recommend using Bio-Clean.
  5. Your garbage disposal is not a trash can. No paper or plastic. No bones, not even chicken bones. No fibrous foods like celery, artichokes, asparagus, corn husks, which can wrap around blades.
  6. Don’t let food accumulate in the disposal. Always run water when running the disposal, and always run the disposal after you do the dishes.
