How hard is Arizona’s water?

The US Geological Survey (USGS) established a rating level for water hardness, which refers to the amount of calcium, magnesium and other minerals found in drinking water. The scale is broken down like this:

  • 0-60 milligrams per liter (mg/l) is soft
  • 61- 120 mg/l is moderately hard
  • 121-180 mg/l is hard
  • 180+ mg/l is very hard

Most of Arizona’s water ranges from hard to very hard – in fact, the USGS reported that the hardest waters in the U.S. are found in Arizona, Southern California, Texas and New Mexico.
